Kannada and Malayalam share a border along coastal Karnataka and northern Kerala, and both absorbed a large Sanskrit vocabulary. But Malayalam grew out of Old Tamil while Kannada developed separately for over a thousand years, so they sound and work quite differently.
Similarities
- ✓Both belong to the Dravidian family and hold classical-language status (Kannada since 2008, Malayalam since 2013).
- ✓SOV word order with agglutinative case suffixes attached to the noun.
- ✓Both use a large Sanskrit-derived vocabulary for formal and religious words.
- ✓Both scripts are rounded, Brahmi-derived abugidas with the full set of voiced and aspirated consonants.
Differences
- ≠Verb agreement: Kannada verbs change for person (ನಾನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ, nānu māḍuttēne — "I do"), but Malayalam verbs do not (ഞാൻ ചെയ്യുന്നു, ñān cheyyunnu, is the same for every subject).
- ≠Word endings: Kannada words usually end in a vowel (ಮನೆ mane, ನೀರು nīru); Malayalam often ends in -ം (-aṁ) or a half-vowel (വീട് vīṭ).
- ≠Malayalam keeps the retroflex ഴ (ḻ) sound — as in മഴ (maḻa, rain) — which Old Kannada wrote as ೞ but modern Kannada lost centuries ago.
- ≠Malayalam script uses "chillu" letters (ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൺ) for pure consonants at the end of a syllable.

Bottom line
Shared Sanskrit words make formal Kannada and Malayalam feel related, but everyday vocabulary, verb endings and sounds differ enough that each needs to be learned on its own.
