Gujarati food
Gujarati thalis are famously vegetarian, layering sweet, salty and sour flavours within the same meal. Farsan (savoury snacks), a touch of sugar or jaggery in vegetable curries, and the spicier Kathiyawadi cooking of Saurashtra all sit within one cuisine.
Gujarati music
Gujarati music is inseparable from Navratri — garba and dandiya raas songs sung through the nine nights — alongside devotional bhajans and the folk narrative-song tradition of Saurashtra and Kutch.
Gujarati dance
Garba and dandiya raas, performed through the nine nights of Navratri, are Gujarat's best-known dances — circular formations that grow faster and more intricate as the night goes on.
Gujarati films
Gujarati cinema is smaller than its neighbours but has earned major recognition in recent years — "Hellaro" became the first Gujarati film to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, and "Chhello Show" was India's official Oscar submission in 2023.
Gujarati traditional attire
Women wear the chaniya choli — a flared skirt, fitted blouse and dupatta — especially for garba, alongside bandhani tie-dye sarees. Men traditionally wear a kediyu (flared top) with a dhoti and a colourful turban called a pagh.
