Kannada culture & traditions
Kannada food
Kannada cuisine ranges from Udupi vegetarian temple food to fiery Mangalorean coastal curries to the regal cuisine of the Mysore palace. Rice, ragi and jowar share the carb crown.
Kannada music
Karnataka gave Carnatic classical music its name. Composers like Purandara Dasa pioneered devotional kirtana, and the state has nurtured many of India's greatest classical and film musicians.
Kannada dance
Yakshagana is Karnataka's vibrant night-long music-dance-theatre form, performed in elaborate costume with epic narratives from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Kannada films (Sandalwood)
Sandalwood, based in Bengaluru, has long been one of India's most respected film industries — from the artistry of Puttanna Kanagal to the recent global phenomenon of "KGF" and "Kantara".
Kannada traditional attire
Karnataka's handloom heritage shines in Mysore silk sarees, Ilkal sarees and Molakalmuru. Men wear the panche (dhoti) with an angavastra; the Mysore peta is the traditional formal turban.
