Marathi culture & traditions
Marathi food
Maharashtrian cuisine ranges from the mild, coconut-and-peanut coastal food of Konkan to the fiery, garlic-heavy fare of Kolhapur and Vidarbha. Jowar and bajra rotis sit alongside rice, and puran poli marks festive meals.
Marathi music
Marathi music spans classical Hindustani gharanas centred around Pune and Kolhapur, the devotional abhang tradition of the Bhakti saint-poets, and natya sangeet — song written for the Marathi musical-theatre stage.
Marathi dance
Lavani is Maharashtra's signature folk dance — vigorous and rhythmic, traditionally performed to the dholki drum within the tamasha folk-theatre tradition. The Konkan coast has its own fisherfolk dance traditions.
Marathi films
Marathi cinema is among the oldest in India — Dadasaheb Phalke, widely called the father of Indian cinema, was Marathi — and the industry continues to produce acclaimed, award-winning work.
Marathi traditional attire
The nauvari (nine-yard saree), draped in a distinctive dhoti-style, is Maharashtra's traditional women's garment, still worn for weddings and Lavani performances. Men traditionally wear a dhoti with a pheta (turban).
