Culture
Bengali culture & traditions
Bengali food
Bengali food is built on rice and fish, with mustard, poppy seeds and panchphoron giving its distinctive flavour. The arc of a Bengali meal — from shukto to mishti doi — is choreographed across courses.
Bengali music
Bengal's musical heritage is led by Rabindra Sangeet — over 2,000 songs by Rabindranath Tagore — alongside Nazrul Geeti, baul folk traditions, and the rich Bengali film music industry of Tollygunj.
Bengali dance
Bengal's classical and folk dance traditions include Manipuri-influenced classical forms taught at Tagore's Visva-Bharati and folk traditions like Chhau and Gambhira.
Bengali films (Tollygunj)
Bengali cinema is among the most-awarded in India. Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, Mrinal Sen, and Ritwik Ghatak made Bengal the cradle of Indian art cinema, and the tradition continues with contemporary auteurs.
Bengali traditional attire
The Bengali woman's saree drape — pleats fanned at the front, achol pinned at the shoulder — is iconic. Sarees range from cotton tant for daily wear to Baluchari and Garad silks for festivals. Men wear dhoti-panjabi.
