ஆலையில்லா ஊருக்கு இலுப்பைப்பூ சர்க்கரை

ālaiyillā ūrukku iluppaippū carkkarai

In a village without a sugar-mill, mahua flower is the sugar

Meaning: When you don't have the best, you make do with what's available.

காக்கைக்கு தன் குஞ்சு பொன் குஞ்சு

kākkaikku taṉ kuñcu poṉ kuñcu

To the crow, its own chick is a golden chick

Meaning: Every parent thinks their own child is special.

ஆழம் தெரியாமல் காலை விடாதே

āḻam teriyāmal kālai viṭātē
