Marathi personal pronouns
Marathi marks formality in "you" and, unusually for the region, splits "we" into inclusive and exclusive forms. Marathi nouns and pronouns also inflect for three genders — masculine, feminine, and neuter — which verbs agree with.
I
मी
mī
First person singular.
You (informal)
तू
tū
Singular informal — close friends, children, family.
You (formal/plural)
तुम्ही
tumhī
Polite singular or plural "you".
He
तो
to
Third person masculine singular.
She
ती
tī
Third person feminine singular. Marathi also has a distinct neuter pronoun, ते (te), used for objects and some animals.
We (inclusive)
आपण
āpaṇ
Includes the listener — "we" as in "you and I". In some contexts आपण is also used as a respectful form of "you"; तुम्ही is the safer default for that meaning.
We (exclusive)
आम्ही
āmhī
Excludes the listener.
