Bengali grammar

Bengali negation with না

Unlike Hindi, Bengali places its negator না (nā) after the verb, not before it. নেই (nei) is used specifically for negative existence and possession.

I don't know

আমি জানি না

āmi jāni nā

না comes after the verb — the reverse of Hindi's word order.

No (plain answer)

না

Also the everyday word for "no."

There is no water

জল নেই

jôl nei

নেই negates existence.

I don't have money

আমার টাকা নেই

āmār ṭākā nei

নেই negates possession.

This is not a book

এটা বই না

eṭā boi nā

না can also negate an identity/description statement in casual speech.
